Malta's 1979 note series was the first issued under the Central Bank following the country's 1974 transition to a republic, replacing earlier notes that still carried the monarch's cipher. The 5 Liri occupied the upper end of everyday circulation denominations and saw heavy use through the 1980s before the series was phased out.
De La Rue printed the full series in London. Wear patterns on surviving examples tend to concentrate at the vertical fold lines — consistent with wallet storage common to higher-value notes held rather than spent quickly.
