| Aversbeschreibung | The obverse presents the current Mexican national arms in high relief at center: a golden eagle perched upon a prickly-pear cactus growing from a rocky outcrop, devouring a serpent, all within a wreath of oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon. Surrounding the central arms in a wide arc are ten smaller historical renditions of the Mexican national coat of arms, each depicting a different heraldic version used throughout the nation's history. The curved legend 'ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS' arcs across the upper-center field between the central device and the surrounding historical emblems. The deeply mirrored proof fields provide strong contrast against the finely frosted devices. |

The Libertad series, launched by Banco de México in 1982, was a direct response to the global investment coin market that had been dominated by the South African Krugerrand and the Canadian Maple Leaf. The 5 onzas denomination entered the series later, targeting institutional and large-scale bullion buyers rather than casual collectors. Mintages for individual years in this size have occasionally dropped into the hundreds — the 2012 proof issue, for instance, had a reported mintage of around 600 pieces — making date runs genuinely difficult to complete.
Unlike sovereign bullion programs from the U.S. or U.K., the Libertad carries no face value, which means its legal tender status is ambiguous under Mexican law.
