Uruguay's late 1960s were dominated by spiraling inflation and the growing insurgency of the Tupamaros, a urban guerrilla movement that would push the country toward military intervention within a few years. The 5 Peso denomination had been a meaningful sum not long before this date; by 1969 it was already being eroded into near-irrelevance by inflation rates that would eventually force a currency redenomination in 1975, when 1,000 old pesos became a single new Nuevo Peso.
