| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Bernardo O'Higgins, Liberator of Chile, depicted in military uniform with elaborate epaulettes and braided collar, rendered in finely detailed relief. The legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE arcs around the upper periphery of the octagonal flan, while the inscription LIBERTADOR B. O'HIGGINS appears to the right of the portrait in two lines. The mint mark appears at lower left of the bust, and the engraver's signature R. THENOT is present on earlier issues. The portrait is executed in a classical neoclassical style with naturalistic treatment of the subject's curly hair and strong profile. |
