Cuba's Foreign Exchange Certificate series was a two-tier currency system designed to capture hard currency from tourists and diplomats while keeping it separate from the peso economy available to Cuban nationals. The "D" series, introduced in the mid-1980s, was specifically intended for use by visitors from capitalist countries — a distinction that mattered enormously in practice, as different certificate types were accepted at different Diplotiendas and hotel shops.
The narrow "D" variety is a scarce typographic variant within P#FX34, differing only in the serif width of the overprinted letter — the kind of detail that emerged from press adjustments at the Státní Tiskárna Cenin facility in Prague, which handled much of Cuba's sensitive print work during this period.
