This 1870 pattern was produced as Uruguay evaluated a gold coinage system during a period of significant monetary reorganization following the country's adoption of the peso as its official currency unit. Patterns of this type were struck in very small numbers — almost certainly for ministerial approval rather than public release — and most known survivors trace back to official or diplomatic sources rather than circulation.
Fr#3 in Friedberg's gold census places this among the earliest Uruguayan gold pattern issues. The KM#PnA29 designation confirms it never progressed to a regular mint run.
