Obverse description Central device depicts the national emblem of Bangladesh: a water lily (shapla) in the foreground, flanked on either side by upright rice sheaves, surmounted by a three-leaf clover representing tea leaves. Four stars appear in the upper field, symbolising the four founding principles of the 1972 constitution — nationalism, secularism, socialism, and democracy. The emblem is rendered in relief against a plain field, presented without additional legend or border inscription.

Additional information

Bangladesh's first coinage series, issued in 1973, was struck just two years after independence following the Liberation War of 1971. The new state needed a functioning currency infrastructure almost immediately, and these earliest aluminium pieces were produced at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales — Bangladesh had no domestic minting capacity at the time.
