| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central device depicts the national emblem of Bangladesh: a water lily (shapla) in the foreground, flanked on either side by upright rice sheaves, surmounted by a three-leaf clover representing tea leaves. Four stars appear in the upper field, symbolising the four founding principles of the 1972 constitution — nationalism, secularism, socialism, and democracy. The emblem is rendered in relief against a plain field, presented without additional legend or border inscription. |

Bangladesh's first coinage series, issued in 1973, was struck just two years after independence following the Liberation War of 1971. The new state needed a functioning currency infrastructure almost immediately, and these earliest aluminium pieces were produced at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales — Bangladesh had no domestic minting capacity at the time.
