This note was issued in the final year before Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence — UDI came in November 1965 — making the 1964 series one of the last to circulate under any semblance of internationally recognized authority. Bradbury Wilkinson's New Malden facility handled Rhodesian currency throughout this period, a relationship that would become diplomatically awkward almost immediately after UDI triggered sanctions.
N.H.B. Bruce served as Governor of the Reserve Bank from 1964, and his signature appears on relatively few note types before the political rupture forced redesigns and issuing authority changes. The £5 denomination in particular saw limited circulation — high-value notes in this period were routinely hoarded as confidence in Rhodesian economic stability began to erode.
