Gibraltar's millennium note was issued by the Government of Gibraltar directly — not through a central bank, which has always been the constitutional arrangement on the Rock. Thomas De La Rue printed this series, as they have handled Gibraltar's currency since the territory began issuing its own notes distinct from the British pound series in 1927.
The 2000 issue was part of a broader commemorative push across British Overseas Territories for the millennium, though Gibraltar's version remained legal tender rather than being issued purely as a collector piece.
