| Reverse description | A finely rendered gemsbok (Oryx gazella) stands in full profile facing left at the centre of the field, depicted standing on a grassy ground line flanked by two sparse acacia-like shrubs. The animal's distinctive long, straight horns extend prominently toward the upper left of the field. The denomination numeral 5 appears in the upper right field above the currency name PULA, both rendered in bold raised lettering against the mirror-polished proof background. |

Botswana's early commemorative silver program was tightly linked to the country's post-independence push to establish institutional credibility through the Bank of Botswana, founded only in 1975. The 1978 issues were among the first substantive silver pieces the young central bank produced, aimed largely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
The gemsbok series has a parallel base-metal version struck for circulation, making the .925 silver KM#11a the premium variant of an existing circulating type — an unusual arrangement that distinguishes it from purpose-built commemoratives.
