| 正面描述 | The national coat of arms of Botswana occupies the central field, featuring a vertically oriented shield quartered with cogwheels and wavy lines representing industry and water, surmounted by a bull's head. The shield is supported on the dexter by a zebra and on the sinister by a second zebra, both rampant. A scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto PULA in raised letters. The country name BOTSWANA arcs along the upper legend, with the date 1978 and the word IPELEGENG inscribed in the lower field. |

Botswana's early commemorative silver program was tightly linked to the country's post-independence push to establish institutional credibility through the Bank of Botswana, founded only in 1975. The 1978 issues were among the first substantive silver pieces the young central bank produced, aimed largely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
The gemsbok series has a parallel base-metal version struck for circulation, making the .925 silver KM#11a the premium variant of an existing circulating type — an unusual arrangement that distinguishes it from purpose-built commemoratives.
