Nakhchivan's 2015 coinage series was issued by the autonomous republic acting on its own monetary authority — unusual given that Azerbaijan's manat circulates there as the official currency. The parallel issue reflects Nakhchivan's constitutionally distinct status within Azerbaijan, a remnant of Soviet administrative structuring that gave the exclave a degree of formal autonomy it has occasionally exercised in symbolic ways.
