Nepal Rastra Bank was established in 1956, replacing the earlier Nepal Bank Limited as the sole authority for currency issuance — a function Nepal Bank had held only partially, with Indian currency continuing to circulate freely well into the 1960s. The 5 Rupee denomination sat at a practical everyday level during this series' long print run, which stretched across fifteen years and at least two distinct signature varieties corresponding to different Governors.

Thomas De La Rue's involvement here is unremarkable by regional standards — they printed for most of South and Southeast Asia throughout this period. The watermark remains the primary security feature, modest even by the specifications of its time.
