Percetakan Kebayoran was established in the early 1950s as part of Indonesia's effort to produce its own currency domestically — a politically charged priority for a republic barely a decade old. By 1958, the printer had gained enough competence to handle the full Bank Indonesia small-denomination series, though quality control across the run was inconsistent, and notes from this period frequently show ink saturation irregularities in the solid color fields.
The 1958 series was withdrawn ahead of the catastrophic December 1965 redenomination, in which all old rupiah were exchanged at 1,000 to 1. Low-denomination notes like this 5 Rupiah saw heavy everyday use and survivors in clean condition are genuinely uncommon.
