ORI — Oeang Repoeblik Indonesia — was the first currency issued by the newly proclaimed Republic, introduced on 30 October 1946 despite carrying a 1945 date. That gap matters: the republic was proclaimed in August 1945, but the monetary infrastructure to back a new currency took over a year to assemble under active Dutch and Allied military pressure. The 1945 date was a political statement, not a print date.

These notes were printed domestically under severe resource constraints, which accounts for the variable paper quality and ink consistency seen across surviving examples. The Dutch colonial authorities declared ORI illegal tender in the territories they controlled, meaning the note's acceptance depended entirely on which side of a shifting military line you stood on.
