Tupou VI ascended to the Tonga throne in 2012 following the death of his brother George Tupou V, who had himself overseen a significant transfer of political power in 2010 — reducing the monarchy's direct role in government and expanding democratic representation in parliament. The 2018 series reflects the first comprehensive coinage update under Tupou VI's reign.
