The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas replaced the old Central Bank of the Philippines in 1993 following a legislative restructuring intended to insulate monetary policy from political interference — these coins, entering production two years later, were among the first small-denomination issues struck under the new authority. Copper-plated steel replaced the earlier aluminum composition, a cost-driven decision that also improved vending machine compatibility.
By the mid-2000s the 5 sentimo had effectively ceased to function in everyday commerce, with most vendors rounding transactions to the nearest 25 centavos. Production continued sporadically regardless.
