Nigeria's post-civil war monetary reorganization prompted a quiet but deliberate reissue of this denomination — the 1968 series arrived while the Biafran secession was still active, and the federal government used currency continuity as one tool among several to assert administrative normalcy. Thomas De La Rue had printed Nigerian notes since independence in 1960, and the relationship gave the federal side a significant logistical edge over Biafra, which was forced to arrange its own separate printing.
The shilling denominations were phased out entirely when Nigeria decimalized in 1973, converting to kobo and naira. This note had barely five years of legal-tender life from issue date.
