| Obverse description | A detailed relief of a standing rooster facing right occupies the central field, rendered with fine engraved feather detail on the plumage, tail, and comb. The bird stands on a plain ground line, conveying a naturalistic pose. The legend REPUBLIC OF SOMALILAND curves along the left and right periphery in upright Latin capitals, following the coin's circumference. The date 2002 appears in the lower exergue beneath the central device. The design is enclosed within a raised rim. |

| Additional information |
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the Siad Barre regime, but has never received formal recognition from any United Nations member state. The Bank of Somaliland nonetheless issued its own coinage beginning in the mid-1990s, a practical assertion of administrative autonomy that functioned locally despite having no standing in international currency markets. These aluminium pieces circulated within Somaliland alongside older Somali shilling coins and a largely cash-dependent informal economy.
