Beschrijving voorzijde Uncrowned, bare-headed effigy of King Edward VIII facing left, rendered in high relief with naturalistic portrait detail. The legend EDWARDVS VIII D : G : BR : OMN : REX curves along the upper periphery, with the abbreviation FID : DEF or DRG appearing in the lower field. The portrait is set against a smooth, unadorned field, and the coin is bordered by a finely toothed milled rim. The style reflects the intended official portrait by Humphrey Paget that was prepared but never adopted for circulating coinage following the abdication.

Aanvullende informatie

Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before his coronation ever took place, which meant no coins bearing his effigy entered circulation in South Africa or anywhere else in the Empire. This piece was struck in 1937 as a medallic souvenir — almost certainly produced privately or semi-officially to capitalize on the abdication's notoriety — using brass rather than the silver of a genuine crown. The gilding is a later enhancement, applied to improve saleability rather than for any official purpose.
