The Southern Rhodesia Currency Board was a passive issuing mechanism — it held no discretionary monetary authority and simply exchanged notes one-for-one against sterling held in London. These 5 Shillings notes circulated during wartime and early postwar years when Southern Rhodesia was contributing troops and resources to the British war effort, and the peg to sterling was the entire monetary policy.
Bradbury Wilkinson printed for dozens of colonial currency boards across the empire during this period from their New Malden works, and the two distinct size variants within this single Pick number suggest a mid-series format change — unusual for such a short-dated issue spanning only five years.
