The KM#4a designation marks the transition from the original bronze composition to bronze-clad steel — a cost-driven recoinage decision common across sub-Saharan Africa in the early 1990s as copper prices made small-denomination bronze coins economically irrational to produce. Botswana made the switch quietly, with no public announcement distinguishing the new planchet type from its predecessor in circulation.
