The Bank of Chosen — Japan's colonial central bank in Korea — issued this note during the final phase of wartime mobilization, when Japan's domestic paper supply was under severe pressure. By 1944, the Imperial Printing Bureau was producing currency at volumes that strained both materials and quality control, and the Chosen series from this period is known for ink inconsistencies and occasional misregistration.
The bank remained the sole issuer for the Korean peninsula until August 1945, after which existing stocks were absorbed into the chaotic post-surrender monetary transition under U.S. and Soviet occupation authority.
