Chiossone was a Genoese engraver hired by the Meiji government in 1875 specifically to modernize Japan's banknote production — he had previously worked for the Italian government and De La Rue in London. This note came out of the first phase of that modernization, using a paper composition derived from mitsumata fiber stiffened with konjac, a distinctly Japanese formula that produced a sheet with tactile properties Western linen-cotton blends couldn't replicate. The combination was deliberately resistant to counterfeiting by woodblock, then still the dominant forgery method.
Chiossone died in Yokohama in 1898, never having returned to Europe.
