P#897 is the standard 1999 Fifth Series 5 Yuan note. The "without YUAN" designation refers to a printing variety in which the romanized denomination text — normally present in the lower margin — was omitted. Whether this resulted from a plate preparation error or a deliberate design revision mid-run has never been officially clarified by the People's Bank.

Distinguishing this variety from the standard issue requires close comparison; the omission is easy to overlook in casual handling, which means misattributed examples appear regularly in trade.
