The Banco Nacional de Bolivia was established in 1871 with Chilean and Bolivian private capital, headquartered in Antofagasta — then a Bolivian port city. Its notes were printed by the American Bank Note Company in New York, the dominant supplier of engraved banknote work for South American issuers throughout the 1870s. The bank's entire operational geography would be upended within a decade: the War of the Pacific (1879–1884) transferred Antofagasta permanently to Chile, leaving a Bolivian-chartered bank physically located in foreign territory.
That political rupture effectively ended the bank's viability as a Bolivian institution. Notes of this 1874 series consequently had a short circulating life.
