The 1991 Lithuanian talonas issues — including this 50 centaurų denomination — were emergency transitional scrip introduced as Lithuania moved to detach its economy from the Soviet ruble. The centaurai subdivisions are particularly obscure; inflation rendered them functionally worthless almost immediately after introduction, and they circulated so briefly that used examples are genuinely harder to find than uncirculated ones.

The Šiauliai branch designation reflects the decentralized printing and distribution logistics of that chaotic period, not a separate issuing authority — the Bank of Lithuania coordinated issuance nationally.
