The Banco Nacional de la República de Colombia had a troubled final decade. Accused of reckless over-emission throughout the 1890s — largely to finance chronic government deficits — the bank was liquidated by 1904, its notes ultimately redeemable at deeply depreciated rates. This 50 Centavos piece belongs to that terminal period, issued as Colombia's paper currency was already in freefall against hard money.
Locally printed in Bogotá rather than farmed out to the British or American security printers favored by wealthier Latin American issuers of the period. The guilloche underprint is the sole mechanical security element — minimal protection against counterfeiting, but counterfeiting was hardly the primary threat when official emission itself was destroying the currency's value.
