| Obverse description | Allegorical effigy of Liberty facing left, her hair elaborately dressed and adorned with a laurel wreath, with flowing locks descending to the shoulder. São Tomé and Príncipe's first locally-denominated coinage — this series was authorized under Portuguese colonial administration as the islands transitioned away from relying entirely on mainland Portuguese currency.
