The Caja de Conversión was established by Argentina's 1899 Conversion Law, which pegged the peso to gold at a fixed rate and ended the monetary chaos of the preceding decade — a period of rampant note overissue that had driven the country to the brink of default in 1890. These early Caja notes were the first Argentine paper currency issued under that stabilized regime, and the institution's credibility depended heavily on public confidence in them.
Louis-Eugène Mouchon was a French engraver best known for his postage stamp work, including the celebrated 1900 Mouchon-type French definitive series issued the same year as this note.
