| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing bust of José Gervasio Artigas, national hero and founding father of Uruguay, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and period military collar. The engraver's initials 'HP' (Humphrey Paget) appear in small incuse letters below the truncation. The circumferential legend 'REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' runs along the upper periphery, while the name 'ARTIGAS' flanked by raised dots and the date '1960' are inscribed in the lower field. The portrait is executed in a neoclassical style characteristic of mid-twentieth-century British die engraving. |
