Swaziland's coinage has remained largely unchanged in design concept since Mswati III's accession in 1986, with periodic restrikes and updated effigy portraits constituting the primary revisions across denominations. The 2015 issue falls within a general recoinage program following years of inflationary pressure that had eroded the purchasing power of lower denominations — the 50-cent coin in particular saw intermittent withdrawal from active circulation as production costs approached face value.

The lilangeni has maintained a strict one-to-one peg with the South African rand since its introduction, making Swazi coinage policy inseparable from SARB decisions.
