The Gambia's currency has been issued by the Central Bank since independence, but the 50 Dalasi denomination at this size reflects a rationalization of the note series that took place in the 2000s and 2010s, bringing dimensions broadly in line with other denominations for easier ATM deployment — a practical concern for a small open economy heavily dependent on tourism remittances and informal cross-border trade with Senegal.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement is unsurprising; they have held Gambian printing contracts across multiple series. The watermark remains the primary overt security feature, modest by contemporary West African standards.
