The 1979 Iranian coinage was issued in the immediate aftermath of the Islamic Revolution, which overthrew Mohammad Reza Shah in February of that year. The new government needed to replace imperial-era coins quickly, creating a transitional series that retained familiar denominations while stripping all monarchical imagery. KM#1231 belongs to that first revolutionary issue, struck while the provisional government under Mehdi Bazargan was still consolidating authority — before the hostage crisis, before the war with Iraq, before the final constitutional shape of the Islamic Republic had even been ratified.
