Algeria's first post-independence banknote series, of which this 50 Dinars is part, was produced by the Banque de France — a politically awkward arrangement given that the Dinar was introduced in April 1964 specifically to replace the French-controlled Algerian franc and assert monetary independence from Paris. The Banque de France printed these notes for a government that had just fought a seven-year war to be rid of French authority.

The series was short-lived. A redesigned issue followed in 1970, and most 1964-dated notes were withdrawn and destroyed, leaving surviving circulated examples genuinely scarce.
