The national motto in Marshallese, JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN, is inscribed along the lower portion of the border. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination $50 appearing to the left and the date 1989 to the right within the inner border. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse depicts a dramatic scene of the first spacewalk of 1965, showing a tethered cosmonaut floating in open space beside the Voskhod 2 spacecraft, rendered in fine relief against a mirror-polished field scattered with stars. The spacecraft is shown in detail with deployed solar panels and antennae. The curved legend FIRST SPACE WALK - 1965 arcs along the upper left periphery, while the denomination 50 FIFTY DOLLARS appears in stylised numerals at the lower right of the field. |

The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in 1986 following the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which granted the republic self-governance while retaining U.S. defense obligations. This piece marks the 25th anniversary of Alexei Leonov's March 1965 EVA — the first extravehicular activity in history — during which Leonov nearly died when his spacesuit inflated so rigidly in vacuum that he could not re-enter the Voskhod 2 capsule. He deflated the suit to dangerous pressure levels to squeeze back in.
