HSBC has issued Hong Kong dollars continuously since 1865, making it one of three note-issuing banks authorized under the territory's unusual arrangement — unique among major financial centers in having no central bank perform that function. The 2010 series represented a significant redesign for HSBC's Hong Kong issues, moving away from the lion imagery that had defined the bank's visual identity on its notes for decades.
Cotton substrate with watermark and embedded security thread places this squarely in the competent-but-unremarkable tier of early 21st-century commercial bank security printing. The series ran through 2016, when updated security specifications prompted the next revision.
