The Bahamas Monetary Authority issued this coin for the country's independence from Britain on July 10, 1973, one of several denominations in a gold commemorative series that marked the transition to sovereignty. The Authority itself was short-lived — it was replaced by the Central Bank of the Bahamas the following year, making this one of the few coin types issued under that specific institutional name.
