Barbados marked its 50th anniversary of independence in 2016 with this commemorative issue, one of a matched pair — a 2-dollar note was released simultaneously. Thomas De La Rue handled both, as they have printed the majority of Barbadian currency since the Central Bank was established in 1972.
Pick 79 is a commemorative rather than a replacement for the circulating series, which has created some collector confusion about its intended status — it was legal tender from issue but never widely used in commerce.
