Columbia's first flight in April 1981 made it the first orbital spacecraft designed to be reused, but by 1991 — the year this coin was struck — it had completed over a dozen missions. The Marshall Islands issued commemorative series aggressively throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, often licensing space and Americana themes for coins with no legal tender circulation whatsoever; the $50 face value was purely nominal against the silver melt.
