Reverse description The reverse presents a finely detailed armored bust of King Philip II of Spain facing left, rendered in high relief in the Renaissance portrait tradition. The king is depicted wearing elaborately engraved plate armor with decorative medallions on the pauldrons and a ruffled collar at the neck, with curly hair and a short beard faithfully evoking his historical appearance. The circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading 'PHILIP · II · D · G · HISPAN · ET · IND · REX', identifying him as King of Spain and the Indies by the Grace of God. The date '1989', flanked by decorative colons, appears in the lower exergual area beneath the truncation of the bust.
