50 Emalangeni

The P#31 series was issued under Majozi Sithole's tenure as Central Bank Governor — a period when Swaziland was actively strengthening the lilangeni's peg to the South African rand through the Common Monetary Area agreement. The 50 emalangeni denomination sat at an awkward middle register: too large for everyday retail use in much of the country, too small for significant commercial transactions, which likely kept circulation volumes modest.

Giesecke & Devrient had printed Swazi notes since the earliest issues, giving the series a consistency in paper quality and security thread placement that collectors occasionally use to spot the few known counterfeits of this denomination.
