The Belgian Treasury's direct-issue notes of this period bypassed the National Bank entirely — an arrangement rooted in postwar fiscal politics, with the Treasury retaining authority over small-denomination paper while the central bank handled larger instruments. This 50-franc type ran for eight years under that division, with two signature variants bookending the series.
Poortman and Minguet were the dominant engraving names in mid-century Belgian note production, and their work here is competent but unremarkable by their own standards. Buisseret, better known as a painter and muralist, contributed designs to several Belgian issues of this period.
The print run of just over twelve million across eight years is modest — consistent with a denomination that saw genuine but not heavy everyday use.
