Iceland's 50 Krónur series from this decade was issued against a backdrop of the Cod Wars — the bitter dispute between Iceland and Britain over fishing rights that escalated dramatically in the mid-1970s. Iceland's unilateral extension of its fishing limit to 200 nautical miles in 1975 nearly collapsed NATO's northern flank, with Britain briefly withdrawing its ambassador in 1976.
