Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Frumoasa Monastery, this coin appeared during a period when Moldova was leaning heavily on commemorative silver programs as a source of hard currency — the national economy in 2000 was still contracting following the severe financial crisis of 1998–1999 that had hammered the leu alongside the Russian ruble collapse. Frumoasa Monastery itself, located in the Ialoveni district, traces its founding to the reign of Moldavian prince Ștefan cel Mare, whose patronage of Orthodox ecclesiastical architecture across the principality remains one of the most documented building campaigns in medieval Romanian history.
