Constantine II spent most of his reign in political freefall. The 1967 coup by the Colonels' junta left him as a figurehead king; his botched counter-coup in December of that year sent him into exile in Rome, and then London, never to return. Coins bearing his name continued rolling out of the Athens mint through 1970, years after he had ceased to exercise any meaningful authority over the country that was still technically issuing them.
