50 Pa'atuna Rotuma

Rotuma is a Fijian dependency roughly 650 kilometers north of the main Fijian archipelago, geographically and culturally closer to Polynesia than to Melanesia. It was ceded to Britain separately from Fiji in 1881 — a distinct act by Rotuman chiefs that the island's people have debated the terms of ever since. The Pa'atu is the traditional Rotuman unit of value, historically represented by fine mats used in ceremonial exchange, and its invocation on a modern struck coin is a deliberate nod to that indigenous economic tradition.
