Petrolunion was a Yugoslav petroleum enterprise, and this 50 para chit belongs to the category of Yugoslav company scrip — internal currency issued by state-affiliated enterprises for use within their own retail or service networks. The Zavod za Izradu Novčanica, the official banknote printing works of the National Bank of the SFRY, produced these pieces, which gives the scrip a production quality well above what most corporate chits achieved. Whether that reflects institutional habit or a deliberate effort to prevent counterfeiting of even low-denomination internal notes is worth considering.
