The Banco Nacional da Guiné-Bissau was the country's sole monetary authority from independence until 1997, when Guinea-Bissau joined the West African Economic and Monetary Union and adopted the CFA franc — effectively rendering the entire peso series obsolete overnight. Notes from the final 1990 printing, including this 50 Pesos, were withdrawn within roughly seven years of issue, a short circulation window that nonetheless left most examples moderately to heavily worn given the region's humid climate and high cash-dependency.
Bundesdruckerei's involvement reflects a West German foreign aid printing relationship that extended across several Lusophone African states during this period.
